6 Ways to Not Lose Your Downline

By: Matt Hellstrom

How do I best go about making sure that the distributors I sponsor stay around and don't drop out? This is a very good, very tough question that people have struggled with forever. You can take some positive steps as a leader to keep your new recruits from bailing right away.

The longer your new distributor stays active in your organization, the more money you're going to make. Therefore, this is an extremely important part of running your business. There are many ways to help ensure they'll stick around, here are 6 ideas that have worked for me.

1. Make sure you're part of a good company. It's crucial that you are involved with a company that you believe in, and that has great products. That way, your new distributor will at least want to keep using the products even if they haven't started making money yet.

2. When you sign them up, make sure they buy your companies most expensive option. That way they'll be more likely to stick around because they have that financial investment. My company has a package that costs $1200, containing all of the products they offer plus many additional sales tools and event passes. My new recruit can try everything that applies to her, and retail the products she doesn't need.

3. Help them to make some money right away. This is called monetizing their business and can be accomplished by getting them involved in affiliate marketing, which really goes hand-in-hand with network marketing. Affiliate marketing is simply advertising somebody elses products online and sending people to their website. Then, you get paid a commission without having to actually make the sale.

4. Develop a personal relationship with them. This doesn't mean that you have to call them every day, but you need to get to know them. If they know that someone is interested in what they're doing, and that your success depends on theirs and vice-versa, you'll be more likely to keep them as a distributor longer. If you don't like talking to people and having relationship with them, network marketing probably isn't the business for you.

5. Train them. Let them know how long it takes to build their business. Don't deceive them just to sign them up. They'll never trust you. Don't oversell - some people might be making $1000 per month within 6 months, but most won't. You don't want to damage the person, making them worse off than when they met you.

6. Don't pigeon-hole them. Just because you like to work on the internet, doesn't mean they will. Maybe they like to make cold calls, or send out postcards. Maybe they just like to talk to everyone they come in contact with. Be open-minded, and don't try to make the new recruit do what you do. There are many ways to skin this network marketing cat, so whatever you do, don't make someone do what they don't want to do.

Your goal is to keep that new distributor involved for as long as possible. Every month they work the business is another month closer to success for you and them. Keeping them an extra 6 months might make the difference between succeeding and failing for you and that new recruit!
