Cholesterol Medications - Lower your high Cholesterol Level

By: peterhutch

Various medications can lower blood cholesterol levels. They may be prescribed individually or in combination with other drugs. Your doctor will determine the best drug or combination for you. Be sure to tell your doctor about all other prescription and over-the-counter medicines you are taking. It's important to continue taking your medicines unless a healthcare professional tells you to stop.

Paying close attention to what you eat and how much physical activity you get are ways to lower your high blood cholesterol. These steps are generally the first line of therapy for anyone with high cholesterol. But because you have diabetes, your risk of heart disease and stroke is much higher than for someone without diabetes. That's why your healthcare provider will encourage you to eat a healthy diet and do regular physical activity to help reach optimal values. Taking a cholesterol-lowering medication can help bring those levels to goal. Learn more about each category and the benefits, side effects and risks.

As you might know by now, cholesterol is a waxy substance, mostly fat like that is made in the liver. Cholesterol serves many vital functions and forms part of every cell in the body. However, our bodies make more cholesterol than we really need sometimes and this excess of cholesterol starts circulating in the bloodstream. The blood vessels can be clogged and there is an increased risk for heart disease and stroke if the cholesterol levels get too high.

Several drugs and diseases can bring about high cholesterol, but for most people, a high-fat diet, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or inherited risk factors are the main causes.

Crestor - Rosuvastatin is an enzyme blocker (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor), also known as a "statin." It is used along with a proper diet to help lower fats (triglycerides) and cholesterol in the blood. This drug is usually prescribed after non-drug treatment options have not been fully successful at lowering cholesterol (e.g., diet change, increase in exercise, weight loss if overweight). Reducing cholesterol and triglycerides help prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Zetia is the newest drug to recently be released that will lower your cholesterol levels. This medication works by decreasing the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed in your intestines after you eat, where as the ‘statins’ that are generally used, reduce cholesterol by limiting the production of it in the liver.

Resins are another commonly prescribed type of cholesterol-lowering medications. Unlike statins, which reduce cholesterol levels by limiting the production of the substance inside the liver, resins stimulate the excretion of the substance from the body. Resins are considered to be very safe and rarely interact with other types of cholesterol-lowering medications. Due to this fact, they are sometimes associated with statins or other similar drugs. The most commonly prescribed resins include: Cholestyramine (Questran), Colesevelam (WelChol) and Colestipol (Colestid).
